There is something truly special about the Florida landscape. Whether it is the salt air of the Keys, the towering oaks of the Ocala National Forest, or the quiet marshes of the Everglades, the "Sunshine State" was made for exploring. For many of us, an RV isnโ€™t just a vehicle; itโ€™s a ticket to that freedom. Itโ€™s a home on wheels, a weekend escape, and a place where some of our best memories are made.

But we also know that the road can be unpredictable. When you are navigating the I-4 or parking in a new campsite during hurricane season, you want to know that your home-away-from-home is protected.

At BP Insurance LLC, we spend a lot of time talking with Florida RVers. Weโ€™ve found that while the dream of the open road is simple, the insurance side of things can feel a little complicated. You might be wondering: Is my trailer covered by my car insurance? Do I need special coverage for my belongings? What does Florida law actually require?

We believe that good insurance starts with a good conversation. We arenโ€™t here to push a policy; we are here to help you understand your options so you can make the best decision for your lifestyle. Letโ€™s walk through what you need to know about rv insurance in Florida.

The Essentials: Floridaโ€™s Legal Requirements

Florida is a "no-fault" state, which means the state has specific rules about what every motorized vehicle must carry. If you own a motorhome insurance Florida policy, there are two big acronyms you need to know: PIP and PD.

1. Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

In Florida, any self-propelled motor vehicle: which includes Class A, B, and C motorhomes: is required to carry at least $10,000 in PIP. This coverage is designed to pay for your medical bills (and those of your passengers) after an accident, regardless of who caused it.

2. Property Damage Liability (PDL)

You are also required to carry at least $10,000 in Property Damage Liability. This pays for damage you might cause to someone elseโ€™s property, like their car or a fence, while you are behind the wheel of your RV.

A quick note on towables:
If you have a travel trailer, fifth-wheel, or pop-up camper, the rules are a bit different. Since these don't have their own engines, Florida generally considers them "towables" rather than "motor vehicles." Usually, the liability coverage from your auto insurance extends to the trailer while it's hitched up. However, your car insurance won't pay to fix the trailer itself or replace what's inside. For that, youโ€™ll want a dedicated camper insurance Florida policy.

Motorhomes vs. Towables: Why the Distinction Matters

One of the first questions we ask when we sit down with a client is, "What are you driving?" The way you insure a motorhome is very different from the way you insure a pull-behind camper.

For Motorhomes (Class A, B, and C)

Because these are driven, they need a "full" policy that looks a lot like car insurance but with extra "home" features. Since these rigs are often quite heavy and expensive, the state minimum of $10,000 in property damage is often not enough. If a large motorhome has a mishap, the costs can climb quickly. We often suggest looking at higher liability limits to protect your assets and give you peace of mind.

For Towable Campers

Many people assume their auto policy covers their trailer completely. While it might cover the liability (the damage the trailer does to others), it rarely covers comprehensive or collision for the trailer itself. If a stray branch falls on your camper during a Florida summer storm, or if itโ€™s stolen from a storage lot, your standard auto policy likely won't help. A dedicated camper policy steps in to repair or replace your rig.

Protecting Your "Stuff": Personal Property Coverage

When you travel in an RV, you carry your life with you. Laptops, cameras, specialized kitchen gear, tools, and outdoor equipment: it all adds up.

Standard auto policies don't really account for the thousands of dollars in personal property we keep in our RVs. That is why we specialize in helping Florida RVers find coverage for their personal property.

Imagine you are parked at a beautiful state park and a power surge fries your electronics, or someone breaks in while youโ€™re out on a hike. Personal property coverage is designed to help you replace those items so your trip isn't cut short. Itโ€™s about more than just the "vehicle"; itโ€™s about the things that make your RV feel like home.

Full-Timer vs. Weekend Warrior

Are you living in your RV year-round, or do you just take it out for the occasional long weekend? This is one of the most important things to share with your insurance partner.

  • Recreational Use: This is for the "weekend warriors." You use your RV for vacations and trips, but you have a permanent sticks-and-bricks home.
  • Full-Timer Coverage: If your RV is your primary residence, you need coverage that acts more like homeowners insurance. This includes "Vacation Liability," which protects you if someone is injured while visiting you at your campsite. It also often includes higher limits for your belongings and emergency expense coverage if your RV becomes unlivable due to a covered loss.

At BP Insurance LLC, we take the time to listen to your travel plans. If you are planning to spend six months in Florida and six months traveling north, we make sure your policy reflects that flexibility.

Why "Good Enough" Usually Isn't

We often see people shopping for the lowest possible price, and we understand that. Everyone wants to save money. But in the world of insurance, "cheapest" can sometimes be very expensive in the long run.

Florida is a unique place to own an RV. Between the humidity, the salt air, and the unpredictable weather, your risks are different here than they would be in the Midwest. We focus on finding improved insurance solutions that don't just meet the legal minimum but actually protect your lifestyle.

Our agents undergo ongoing training to stay experts in the Florida market. We don't just sell you a policy and disappear; we are here for the long-term. We want to be the partner you call when you upgrade your rig or decide to take that cross-country trip you've been dreaming about.

Weโ€™ve helped clients save significant money: sometimes thousands of dollars: by finding the right credits and dividend plans. But more importantly, we make sure they have the right information to make the best decisions.
